[Cubicle Drawing 09] - Paper Mario Picnic

[09 of 36] of my series of drawings/ doodles I did during my 4.5 month work contract as a game tester. All done during idle time and break periods.

Hoo boy... this piece would serve as the last focal point in my drawing spree because following this insanely, ambitious compilation, I would produce several more. Portrait style drawing got a bit dull so I looked into different alternatives for doodles. I was compelled to do something with Paper Mario because I absolutely loved the series and played every title released thus far. It didn't feel right to incorporate just a few characters at the time because it might come out as too flat (pun not intended). I debated with myself and then I finally decided that I would compile them all into a single piece. I put together all the playable and partner characters in all the Paper Mario titles combined, including Luigi's crew from his own adventures in Thousand-Year Door. Planning for this wasn't as hard as it suggests on first view because I followed somewhat of a paradigm of Capcom's artwork whereas they would have massive amount of characters whether in same series/ crossover/ or even in-crossover, all mashed together in a single drawing. It was this kind of explosive piece of different spectacles that I coined as a "Capcom Crowd" (and you'll be seeing more of these later on). Although this drawing suggests layers used, that is completely untrue, because I drew this completely flat on a single piece of paper. It wasn't easy, but I managed with as little erasing and redoing as possible. I left out shading because my intent was to color this at one point.

The compilation's foundation itself came easy, as a picnic would be the best way for everyone to interact with one another. I had to plan out of a bit of who interacts with who, this took longer than coming up with the whole entire Paper Mario Picnic idea. Madame Flurrie was a bit of a challenge given how... awkward her game sprite was... so I had her hold a fan like Lady Bow. Speaking of which, to retain the authentic Paper Mario appearance I drew everyone as their sprites, mostly because I didn't have a lot of time to inject more creative perspectives. You may recognize the piece of meat that Bowser is holding is the same one from his Super Mario Bros. levels in Thousand-Year Door. A friend asked me if I drew Luigi (in general, not for this particular drawing) due to it being the Year of Luigi, and indeed I did; even if he wasn't a main character in Super Paper Mario, he is easily recognizable in any Paper Mario title, making his exclusion unfounded. The only ones I could not fit in the picnic are the Star Spirits and Twink; in a future redraw, I will most certainly incorporate them as well which will also include no cut-off characters due to paper size. I'll also try to incorporate the "Hamburger" Spinia that was removed from the final version that was purportedly to be another of Luigi's partners; I'm sure I can come up with an appropriate name as well.

A neighboring co-worker was completely surprised at this drawing/ doodle, so much so he told one of his facebook friends about it, who also liked to draw AND who didn't believe that someone could draw all of Paper Mario on one piece of paper... that is until my co-worker took a quick smart phone picture of it... sure proved him wrong I suppose lol. From what my co-worker has told me, this helped encouraged his facebook friend to draw more. I believe most of my co-workers called me insane after I finished this drawing.
